Former President Uhuru Kenyatta Eulogizes Kelvin Kiptum
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed condolences over the tragic demise of Kelvin Kiptum, the men’s marathon World Record holder, who perished alongside his Rwandese coach in a grisly road carnage on the Elgeyo Marakwet – Ravine Road near Kaptagat area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Kenyatta honored Kiptum’s achievements, notably his groundbreaking world record-breaking feat at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, where he became the first man to complete a marathon in under two hours and one minute (2:00:35).
“The former Head of State also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the sporting community following the untimely passing of Kelvin Kiptum, the men’s marathon World Record holder, in a gruesome road accident along the Elgeyo Marakwet – Ravine Road,” the statement read.
The 24-year-old marathoner was traveling towards Ravine with his Rwandese coach, Garvais Hakiziman, when the fatal collision occurred.
Kiptum’s death few days after his Chicago marathon world record was officially ratified by World Athletics.
“The accident occurred at around on Sunday night, with the vehicle carrying three occupants; two lost their lives on the spot while one was rushed to the hospital,” Elgeyo Marakwet County Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed to the nation.
Besides mourning Kiptum, Kenyatta also paid tribute to retired Senior Assistant Inspector General King’ori Mwangi, hailing him as a diligent leader known for his integrity and commitment to service.
Mwangi passed away on Sunday, February 11, at Nairobi Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
“May the Lord grant both families solace and strength during this challenging period,” remarked the former Head of State.
King’ori served in various capacities throughout his stellar career, including as Provincial Police Officer in Nairobi, Mombasa and Western regions.
He also held roles such as Director of Kenya Police Campus in Kiganjo, Director of Operations at police headquarters, and police spokesperson.
